Racer Natalie Fenaroli Finishes 2013 Season in Second Place in Teen Mazda Challenge (TMC) Central Region

It was a season of ups and downs, highs and lows, running hot and driving cold. Team Fenaroli raced in the NASA Central Region TMC for 2013 except for one open wheel race run in COMMA where Fenaroli took 2nd. Her Spec Miata race car was kept in a high level of prep by Jesse Prather Motorsports allowing Fenaroli to make a strong run in TMC for the Central and Rocky Mountain Regions(RM). Fenaroli opened the TMC series within a series in Pueblo, CO back in May with a Win making her the first female to win a TMC race. The very competitive series next moved to Heartland Park, Topeka where limited practice lead to a 6th place finish in the first race though she was able to get 4th in the second race. Next up was Hallett race track in OK where RM, Central and Texas Regions combined for a 30+ car field. In the first of three races she finished 5th in TMC. It went bad from there with Fenaroli getting punted in the second race on lap 3. Natalie was able to race back from 29th to 18th in a gutsy drive though she was clearly disappointed. She was able to stay in the top 3 all season long in points and still had a chance to win going into the last race of the TMC year at Hasting Motorsport Park in NE, but a blown radiator line in a warm up race Friday caused her to be down on power the rest of the weekend.

Fenaroli said, “It was great to be so competitive all year. This was my third full season in the Big W Miata and my first in this series. The racing was great and we met a lot of cool people along the way.” Natalie would like to thank Rick Fiske for his continued support and keeping her in a good race car, as well as Jesse Prather for making her car competitive.

Driver Natalie Fenaroli 2012 Season Wrap-Up

The 2012 racing season started early for now 17 year race car driver Natalie Fenaroli down at the Texas Motorsports Ranch (TMR) in mid-March. Hauling her BigW/KCEngines/KCRim Shop Spec Miata 10 hours to TMR turned into one of her more frustrating weekends with her usually very reliable Miata suffering multiple wheel bearing failures at the NASA Texas Region event. Natalie and her team had travelled far so she could participate in Mazda’s Teen Mazda Challenge. It became clear by the end of the weekend that the car was under powered for this level of racing where the field had more than 35 Miatas including 2 regional champions. She DNF’d in the first race with a bearing failure, took 26th in the second race with another bearing going out and break pad damage and finished the weekend a humble 23rd.

The following weekend in late March Natalie started her open wheel season at Hallett in her # 33 Formula S Argo which she had raced one other time at the end of the previous season. The car was in good form and so was Natalie battling up to 3rd for a career high finish in cars.

With a limited budget, Team Fenaroli decided to focus on getting Natalie seat time in her open wheel car. April 28-29 was race two in the COMMA race series at Hallett road racing circuit in Jennings, OK. Natalie again looked good in her open wheel car right up to the point in the pre-final that her oil pump lost the belt and damaged the motor putting an end to her weekend.

After missing several mid-season races Natalie was again able to return to the fray with another strong outing at the end of September where she took her third podium of the year finishing 3rd. The last race of the season Fenaroli finished 6th after a late race spin as her tires were going away but still managed to set a personal best fastest lap at Hallett 1:18.04 “I had a great season at Hallett in my Argo. I am very grateful to the Stephens family who operate the track for being so supportive of me. I really felt like I learned a lot over the course of the season, and what can I say, it was nice being able to see my wheels again.”

Fenaroli is in Indianapolis for the IMIS trade show for the next couple days and is looking forward to the “Women in the Winners Circle Panel Discussion” Friday afternoon, moderated by Lyn St James.

Late season race report - 9/1/11

Natalie has had an action-packed season of racing this year with many milestones met.

Her season started in the cold of March where she set a personal best time that was good enough for 5th place in the season opener racing her www.premiercobras.com Spec Miata in the COMMA series at Hallett raceway outside of Tulsa, OK.

Race two in April Natalie looked strong again but a spin sent her to the back of the pack. She was able to race back through a number of cars but had to settle for a disappointing 8th on the weekend. June’s race saw a similar outcome with Natalie finishing 7th after getting shuffled back during the main.

In late June Natalie had a great adventure. She went to New Zealand with her mom to learn how to race open wheel cars! A Formula Ford was made available to Natalie at the Ruapauna race track on the edge of Christchurch, NZ. Canterbury Driving School based at Powerbuilt Raceway at Ruapuna Park is owned and operated by Andy Neale and his wife Michelle. Natalie spent 7 days with Andy driving in all kinds of weather and in a Mazda RX7 as well as the FF. Her one-on-one time with Andy really helped set a foundation for her future move to open wheel. Natalie and her mom stayed with a family down the road from the track, Martyn and Rachel Sim and their two daughters. Natalie experienced several earthquakes while there including a 5.x, a ground breaking experience indeed! Natalie could not have made such a great trip and learned so much without the help of the Sims, the Neales, Jeremy Shaw who let Natalie borrow his FF and helped get the wheel rolling, Bill Gagne and especially David Sheehan. Many Thanks!

In July, after looking racy during Saturday’s practice for race 5, Natalie’s Miata lost the transmission during practice Sunday morning. A search of the pits for a trans turned up a transmission and an offer to borrow another car. Chris Miller who is the point’s leader checked with Craig Silburg who was not going to run that weekend but whose car was at the track to see if Natalie could run his car. Craig graciously agreed so Natalie did not have to go home early. Though the car was not as strong as the www.premiercobras.com Spec Miata, she was able to drive to a decent 5th place finish. Thanks Craig; that was cool of you!

August 21 2011, Natalie drove a winged open wheel car for the first time during a test day at Hallett. The car was Argo chassis 001 (technically her sister’s car). The car is an old school car close in size and power to a Formula Continental but a bit heavier. Natalie followed what Andy Neale had taught her about going out and learning the braking points and shifting points in the first session. Natalie came in to report the brakes were not great but worked OK. The second session she started working on her line more. Because she knows the track, during the third session her times dropped rapidly as she started putting the sections together. By the time she was done for the day she was running very good times especially for her first time in a car with down force. This was a definitive moment that Natalie served notice that she has only begun her climb, but climb she can. Thank you Tim Webb for your help and feedback during Sunday’s successful test and Jesse Prather for sorting the car and pouring a custom seat for Natalie. Natalie hopes to race the car this year in at least two events if she can find sponsorship for the car.

Race 6 she did well right to the point where the rear end failed on her Spec Miata. The car was not handling well for Saturdays’ practice as Natalie came to grips J with new, more aggressive brake pads on her car. Sunday was a different story. With her race tires on and a night to analyze how different her car was with much more initial bite, Natalie adjusted her style and dropped her times in Sunday morning’s practice. She qualified a disappointing 7th losing 2 spots by less than 1/10th. The prefinal race showed Natalie as a road warrior taking it to both drivers that had edged her out in qualifying and getting another spot to finish the race in 4th in one of her most solid drives yet. The main started well and Natalie established herself firmly in 4th gapping 5th and the rest of the field by 10 car lengths by the third lap when her rear differential broke putting her out of the double points race.

The car is a good car and she gets so much seat time practicing and racing. Her 5 races thus far are akin to 20 SCCA events. The Mazda Miata is a great tool for racing. When you take into account that she drives it at the limit over and over and things like the transmission and rear end are just stock items, it is amazing how well it really is made.

Natalie has two more races this season and also hopes to race her open wheel car. Stay tuned!

CARA

In May, Natalie was honored to be invited to model in the 28th Annual CARA Charities Fashion Show in Indianapolis a few days before this year’s running of the Indy 500. Championship Auto Racing Auxiliary (CARA) was founded in 1981 to serve the professional auto racing community through charitable work and to promote the friendships of those involved in the motorsports family.

CARA Charities occupies a special place in the motorsports community. Since its founding, CARA has donated more than $4 million dollars to dozens of philanthropic causes helping children, hospitals, scholarship funds, ministries and numerous charitable foundations.

While in Indy, Natalie went to the CARB Day races Friday and was able to meet and talk with several team principals. This was not the first occasion she was able to spend time with an (Indy Lights) team on race day. She is looking forward to learning more team race day strategies and listening in on driver/team communications at future races.

Big 100

Natalie raced in her 100th main in June in Quincy, IL. She has more than 270 finishes now (qualifying races, prefinal races etc).

Fittingly, it was her first time in a shifter kart. It took her a couple tries to get the standing start clutch brake gas gear thing in the right sequence, but in the main she got it right. She had good lap times and now will work on consistency and driving mechanics. The shifter kart is a very different style of racing. She was very excited at how well the main went. It was a great weekend and a new beginning with many great challenges to come.

To celebrate, a week later family and friends met up at 75TH Street Brewery in Kansas City and surprised Natalie with a little party. On display table was some racing memorabilia including a few choice trophy’s, her first set of racing shoes from when she was five and a battle scarred nose cone that was a victim at the Super Nationals in Las Vegas last November that everyone signed.

Women In The Winners Circle Awards

Natalie went back to Indianapolis July 23rd for the 7th Annual Women in the Winners Circle Awards ceremony where she was a featured driver. The event is organized by Lyn St. James and celebrates the diversity and the successes of women in motorsports. It was held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Natalie had the opportunity to attend a meet and greet with racing industry leaders like Mike Helton, President of NASCAR, and fellow women racers including Sarah Fisher and Melanie Troxel. Natalie was also introduced on stage as one of the five women racers who received Project Podium Grants from the WWCF. Jamie Little of ESPN introduced Natalie and noted she used the money to win the TAG Jr. Championship for ‘08 in the SKUSA Central States Challenge Series.

Natalie Fenaroli Wins SKUSA CSC TAG Jr Championship 2008!

Go kart racer Natalie Fenaroli was able to pull a rabbit out her helmet to win the SKUSA CSC TAG Jr Championship for 2008.

After qualifying 5th Saturday at the I55 Raceway in Pevely Mo, Natalie knew she would need a great prefinal race to get in front of her rival for the points championship who had qualified 4th. Fenaroli had the inside line going into the first turn and was able to get in front of the her main competitor the 48 kart as was another driver. Things went well for 4 of the 8 lap prefinal till the 48 kart made a poor move at the end of the straight-a-way diving in on the kart behind Natalie missing him but hitting her at a side angle in the rear wheel sending her spinning off the track. She was able to get going again finishing 7th while the 48 kart was Black Flagged and pulled from the heat for the incident.

With a bent axle and a chunk missing out of her brake rotor Natalie went into the Final race of the season ready to give it all she had with what she had. Her PG Racing Wild Kart had time and again proved to be a great machine. This day would be no different, as the green flagged dropped, Natalie dove to the left and passed a row of karts before they got to the first turn. As the karts sorted themselves out before turn 2, Natalie was able to establish herself in 4th place. Within 2 laps the 48 kart was on her bumper and the two racers battled the next 16 laps. Though it was for the fourth or fifth position in this race, many knew this was the match-up to watch for the series Championship. Natalie was unable to shake him loose but she hit her marks every turn on every lap. The Championship came down to the last corner of the last race. The two passed the start finish line nose to tail with Natalie holding him off and taking fourth in the race and the SKUSA Central States Challenge TAG Jr Championship for 2008!

AutoWeek's "Five of the Fastest Women You Will Ever Meet"

Natalie Fenaroli is featured in an article in this week's issue of AutoWeek titled "Five of the Fastest Women You Will Ever Meet" with a picture of Natalie and her PG Racing Wild Kart! The story is written by automotive legend and journalist Denise McCluggage. Natalie got on Denise's radar several years ago after Bob Stork, a Kansas City based auto journalist, started sending Denise impressions and results of the young Miss Natalie. When Denise came to town in 2006 for the SCCA convention she brought Natalie her latest book By Brooks Too Broad for Leaping and joined Natalie and the Age and Treachery gang for breakfast. Denise was inducted into the "SCCA Hall of Fame" later that evening. Denise has been Natalie's champion ever since. We greatly appreciate the support of people like Denise and Bob. Inclusion on such a short elite list is a great honor and benefit for Natalie's rising star. Date on the magazine is July 21 and has Ashley Force on the cover. It is now online at www.autoweek.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080721/FREE/165717721/1531/FREE

Fenaroli Regains Overall Points Lead with One Race To Go (10/2/08)

Kart Racer Natalie Fenaroli had a strong second place this past weekend in the SKUSA CSC TAG Jr. division giving herself a narrow overall points lead and is now within 13 points of the title lead with only one race to go. Going into the last race of the ‘08 season, 3 drivers including Natalie are within a few points of one another. It will come down to the last race of the year to decide who will win the TAG Jr. Championship.

This past weekend Natalie raced for the first time on the high banks of I-70 Speedway in Odessa, MO. She tried hard to adapt to the temporary chicanes that punctuated the long asphalt oval to slow down the racers. She was able to qualify second to national-level driver Broc Yocom who normally races Stars of Karting on the east or west coast. The weekend turned into the Broc and Natalie show as the two young racers battled it out. In the pre-final on Saturday, Yocom had clutch problems putting Natalie out front which she held to win the first race. Unfortunately she was docked 3 seconds and bumped to second place after she cut a section of a temporary cone corner twice.

Natalie started the Main on Sunday in the same place she qualified in (second) and held the position through the first corner at the start of the 14 lap race. Her speed was immediately apparent as she started pressuring the leader. At the end of the first lap in a hard braking zone coming off the high banks with Natalie pressuring, the leader spun out giving Natalie the lead. Meanwhile Yocom wasted no time coming through the field after getting several drivers in a great start before the first turn. By the end of lap 2, Yocom was firmly on Natalie's rear bumper as the two drivers battled lap after lap. Natalie would gain a slight margin in one section but Yocom would close in another, never more then a couple kart lengths back and usually only inches as the two ran away from the rest of the field. On lap 10 Natalie blinked and went too wide through the same turn in which the first leader had spun; Yocom was ready going inside as they raced side by side with Brock getting Natalie a turn later. Natalie cruised to a second place finish and earned enough points to take the overall championship points lead, but when the two allowed drops are counted she is actually in second place, 13 points back. She gained points on her two main rivals giving her a real shot now at winning the championship. The last race will be in three weeks at I-55 Speedway in Pevely, MO where she opened the season with a PremierCobras.com WildKart win.

VEGAS BABY!

We are also excited to announce Natalie will be competing in the SKUSA Super Nationals Nov. 20 in Las Vegas. This will be her first foray into International Competition since moving up to the TAG Jr. 125cc class. Natalie who is a Project Podium grant recipient will be one of the youngest competitors there, but she thinks she can adapt fast to the temporary circuit that will be built in the parking lot of the Isle of Capri Casino. The temporary nature of the circuit is a great equalizer removing the "home track advantage" she often has to contend with. If all the stars align we are hoping for a near 10 finish in her first trip to the Super Nats. The class is sold out with 40+ karts coming. In such a large field qualifying will be crucial.

Natalie Fenaroli Wins SKUSA Central States Challenge Race 1!!! - 6/8/08.

Sunday was Natalie's first TAG JR SKUSA race. She qualified 4th out of four but took 2nd in the prefinal, setting herself up to win the main.

In the brutally hot 20 lap main, she got the lead into the first turn and held it for 11 laps fending off the faster karts. She got passed on the back side of the track by Drake Ostrom but she was able to stay in second, and keep on the leader. She made her move two laps later going down the straight to get the lead back. Second and third started battling letting her get a gap but the pole kart Kaylee Grandberg made it to 2nd and she closed with 2 laps to go. Natalie was running a better line towards the end though, and was able hold off Kaylee to win the series opener!

She had her WildKart dialed in, including the right gearing. Fastest lap of the weekend on her micron was 18th of the main. The WildKart from PGRacing.com just got better and better as the race progressed.

She also got to meet the President of SKUSA Tom Kutscher who was in town from CA for the inaugural event. He told Natalie SKUSA has a good arrangement with the Jim Russell Racing School. They just bought all new full carbon Lola F3 cars which they can detune for school. She was very excited to hear this as she plans a path towards cars.

Julia Fenaroli also raced for the 5th time in kid karts. She started finding her groove and improved her times all weekend. A loose wheel ended her final a couple laps early.

* * *

October 27-28 was the the last race of the 07 season. Natalie had been in the hunt for the 60ccTAG Novice championship but she got knocked off the track in the prefinal on Saturday. She had never run this track in the direction run this past weekend and she only got a few laps of practice before qualifying, putting her way back in a large field. She made progress forward and was in 8th when she got bumped off the track putting her 19th for the Novice main.

In the 60cc TAG Rookie class she only started marginally better but had made it to 8th place when her motor cut out. She pulled the choke and it came back to life but not before she dropped to 12th. She ended 11th which dropped her one place in end of the year points to 4th overall on the year in the Rookie class.

Though seemingly out of contention in the Novice class Natalie drove hard and caught a break when her main rivals knocked each other out early in the race. She went from 19th all the way to 6th in the race earning her the Central States Super Series (CSSS) Novice Championship for 07.

She had a helmet camera on for the Novice main. You can watch it on youtube. It's a pretty wild ride.

Natalie had a great year and was picked up to be a factory driver for Wild Kart of Italy (their US importer) next year. She moves up to the TAG Junior/ Junior shifter classes next year. She's back to the bottom of the barrel, but we know she'll be contending again soon.

Our girl did well racing this weekend up in Iowa. The track was the karting equivalent of "Field of Dreams". Great technical track, not super fast but with lots of turns and large elevation changes, a cork-screw, and a turn that goes down then up to the lip called the "toilet bowl". Natalie bent two sprockets getting the hang of the track on a turn we dubbed the pit.

Not many places to pass but she was one of the few that figured out how and where. We are badly underpowered but her skill showed at this track. She qualified 3rd in the novice class and 6th in the expert class on Saturday, several seconds slower then 1-3, and a second slower then 5th. These were huge gaps.

Sunday we discovered her new axle was bent in the novice qualifier while she was passing a slower kart. Though I had a spare axle, the brake hub bolts stripped and I was unable to extricate said bent axle. So she run what we brung. In Sundays Novice prefinal she took third and in the expert she gained a spot and took fifth.

There were lots of drivers behind her that were faster but the track and her consistent driving held them off. In the main novice race she fell ten kart lengths back of second by mid race, but kept at it and started reeling second place in. With two laps to go she was on him, and a little bobble and around she went. She took second going away. The crowd loved it! The expert main she got a great start and got fourth into the second turn. A great battle ensued with four then three nose to tail the whole race. In the end she inched out a few kart lengths over her pursuers who started to fade a bit in the heat at the end, so she ended up with a strong fourth. Natalie's times were her best of the weekend in the expert main.

Natalie has been asked to join the PG racing team henceforth. She will be racing an Italian made Wild Kart for next season with full support of the US importer. PG is out of Wentzville MO where they are building a new race track. A great perk for the weekend was PG brought a hospitality trailer that had ac, food, and drinks that Natalie could go cool down in. This is obviously great news for her racing aspirations.

KART Sprint National Championships - 6/26/07

Made it home Sunday night. Natalie took fourth Friday night in Cadet TAG after qualifying 4th and finishing 4th in the prefinal. She finished 5th in the main and got an award which they later upgraded one position.

Saturday she had to add 20lbs of weight for the TAG Heavy class but still qualified 4th and took fourth in the pre final. In the main she was awesome. She held the lead from lap 12 to lap 18 holding off two faster karts. It was the longest race of our life.

Finally the #1 qualifier who was way faster down the straight took her on the inside(way inside) and the other stayed on his tail into a long left flat sweeper. They both beat her to the turn. Natalie made an exquisite cross-over pass as the #2 kart was a little high after he over took her. She beat him to the next turn and then drove the last two laps flawlessly inching out a couple of kart lengths. She finished second. It was her best finish at a National since 03. She was out motored, but not out driven(curse you Mini Swift!).

She has 18 of 19 top five finishes in her TAG including 6 in Nationals (5,4,4,3,4,2).

This Friday she takes a shot at the KART Road Race Nationals at Heartland park in Topeka KS.

Aug 8th 06

Natalie currently is second place in points in the KART Mid America Sprint Series Tag Cadet. She has 11 race starts so far this season including 4 National level races all podiums.

We had a wild time at the 06 KART Sprint Nationals in TulsaOK, but managed to make it home in one piece. Weather was a factor and Friday night's races were shut down by the Sheriffs. We lost our trailer pulling onto the freeway but the safety chains that were sort of connected caught it and we managed to stop with minimal damage to truck and trailer.

She drove real well. She took 5th Friday night in a police abbreviated night! Top five got awards. Saturday night driving the led sled in the TAG heavy race she scrapped her way to an awesome 4th, beating all the team supported drivers. She led for four laps in the pre final on Saturday.

She tried road racing at Mid America Motorplex (MAM) the weekend of the July 8th. She ran her TAG Cadet Sprint kart on the road course(car track). She really liked the long track so she decided to take a shot at the KART Enduro Nationals July 29-30 at Heartland Park in Topeka KS. She was fast in practice but some weak officiating during Saturday's race allowed blatant cheating to stand so she had to settle for 3rd. On Sunday in the TAG Heavy race she reeled in the third place kart and battled for 3 laps but was passed on the last turn and took fourth. Road racing is a very different kind of racing then sprint driving. She has learned a lot in just the four races and Natalie has been well received by the enduro community. Because these tracks are the one's that she will eventually be racing cars on, the experience at 10 years old is great.

The awards party Saturday night was put on at the track by the Van Noy family of Kansas City who own Jess and Jims Steak House (Great food if your in KC/ MartinCity). They cooked great food and a first for Natalie; the three drivers got champagne (no alcohol) and did the pop and spray your podium mates thing. It was great!

Natalie Races

As serious as a ten year old can be, she wants to race, win and move up to open wheel race cars or NASCAR. A road racer to the core, Natalie has over 200 heat starts! Starting in Kid Karts in 2000 she learned how to compete in the motor sports racing arena. In 2003 while winter was still gripping the Midwest, Natalie went out and did some racing in California at the new Grange motor Circuit, and the famous and technical Adams kart track. Somewhere in this period a connection was made in her brain that most will never know or understand; she got racing. The road, the different tracks, her age, the amount of seat time, all these things came together in this little girl and turned her into a racing powerhouse.

The 2003 season saw her come into her own and dominate. With the same kart and same stock unmodified motor she won every heat at her clubs new track for the first four races. In the MASS where every heat was a battle she won four of the six races she competed never finishing off the podium. On numerous occasions she has set fastest time in qualifying and swept all three heat races. In 2004 Natalie moved up to the powerful 100cc Yamaha Cadet (Jr1) class. Starting out as a rookie she did not take long to get back on the podium. She took a third in only her third club race. She then added two second place finishes in KCKA club action. She had a great second place finish on Aug 14th 2004 at the Apex Open in CA under the lights in a tough flawless drive. In her first money race under the lights in Carrollton MO Sept 4th 2004 she finished 4th out of 13 karts and came home with a check! In 2005 she spent most of the summer racing season with her ailing Grandma in CA. She did race in the first and last KART race and ran with the Comers at the wonderful and technical Prairie City kart track in CA with its blind rises, cork-screw turn, and lots of elevation changes.

Kid Kart Nationals 2003

In the Group 2 main she started 3rd but had the lead at the end of the first lap; though not for long. An incredible battle between three karts ensued with the lead changing two and three times in a lap. One of the karts spun leaving the battle between Natalie and a boy from Cleveland Ohio. The white flag came out one lap early on the eighth lap, so the first two racers saw the white flag twice. On the final lap, Natalie came out of the last corner right on the other driver’s tail. She was able to carry more momentum out of the turn taking a wider line then darted to the inside. The two karts drag-raced side by side for the checkered flag where Natalie won by a nose!! In a great showing of sportsmanship, after she was awarded first place in the awards ceremony, she agreed to share her first place with the other driver due to the confusion with the flags.
